Our Fave Winter Wedding Flowers
To all the happy couples who got engaged over the holiday season: huge congrats! Our floral team is so excited to connect and assist with planning our favorite part of any major celebration: flowers, of course! As a resource for our community, we’re creating guides to our favorite seasonal flowers, to inspire you as you plan your big day.
Why We Love Seasonal Flowers
We’re lucky to be flowering in one of the best regions for sourcing seasonal blooms! In addition to Native Poppy’s own flower garden in El Cajon, we also source from several local (woman-owned!) flower farms, including Psalter Farms, BeeWorthy Farms, and Cielo Hills Flowers.
The flower industry has grown to support daily demand for beautiful blooms, so there’s always something gorgeous available from our wholesale distributors. Most flower varieties can be sourced year-round, shipped from places like Colombia, Ecuador, Holland, and Kenya. While we are grateful to have unfettered access to our favorite fleurs throughout the year, we love using seasonal, locally grown flowers whenever possible, which reduces the environmental impact of shipping flowers around the globe.
By choosing seasonal, locally grown flowers, you’re selecting varieties that are freshest, and cut at their peak – adding a bit of extra sparkle to that centerpiece or bouquet.
If you’re curious about what’s in season right now, stop into our South Park or Solana Beach flower shops! Our florists will guide you through our seasonal faves, and locally grown flowers are always labeled on our stem bar.
Our Favorite Winter Wedding Flowers
Anemone
One of our most requested flowers during the winter season, Anemones feature delicate petals which often contrast with their dark centers. These flowers come in a wide variety of shades, including vibrant red or blue. Fun fact: Anemones are traditionally associated with the ancient Greek goddess of love: Aphrodite.
Tulip
Commonly associated with spring and renewal, we find early crops of Tulips are sometimes available from our local farm partners as early as February! We adore the moody mauve colored Tulips we sourced from Psalter Farms in 2024, and hope they’ll make a return as late winter wedding flowers this year.
Hellebore
With naturally downcast flower heads, you may not have predicted that Hellebores would be one of our favorite winter wedding flowers! On the contrary: we adore these pretty flowers for their unique petal structure and their range of moody colors. These striking flowers are a beautiful choice for a couple who love colors like burgundy, mauve, sand, or green.
Ranunculus
These gorgeous flowers are a customer favorite, and you can see why! Their soft layers of petals are delicate and swoony, and come in a wide variety of shades to match almost any wedding color palette. Native Poppy’s florists love using Ranunculus for wedding bouquets, boutonnières, floral centerpieces, and more.
Sweet Pea
This frilly flower is a delicate beauty with a gorgeous fragrance. We love using Sweet Pea flowers for weddings, because we know scent can be a powerful connection to memory – what better way to remember your big day than with the soft scent of Sweet Pea?
Iceland Poppies
Our local farm partners start harvesting these leggy blooms as early as January, providing a shot of color for one of the greyest months of the year. Iceland Poppies have papery petals in shades of red, orange, yellow, white, and peach, the perfect floaty flower to add romance to any arrangement. Fun fact: Native Poppy’s co-owner Meg Blancato has a tattoo of this frilly flower!
Kale
Yes, you heard us right: Kale! This cruciferous veggie grows in elegant rosettes that can act as a delightful focal flower in statement floral arrangements. Their large size means extra value – these beauties come in white, green, and shades of purple, and can add heft to a winter floral arrangement.
Strawflower
Our local farm partner in Encinitas, BeeWorthy, was harvesting gorgeous Strawflower as early as February last year! This hardy flower features colorful flowerheads that feel dried, even though they are fresh – making them a great choice for wedding personals like boutonnières, corsages, or flower crowns. While this might be a non-traditional choice for winter wedding flowers, our Southern California couples have access to some extra special varieties, even early in the year.
Narcissus
Also known as Daffodils, varieties of Narcissus come in shades from yellow to peach to white. Paperwhites are a traditional winter bloom, growing in the coldest season and adding beauty to winter tables. We love using these iconic flowers in winter bouquets and floral centerpieces – carefully conditioning these flowers first so they’ll play nicely with other blooms.
Amaryllis
These stunning blooms are showstoppers! Featuring thick stems and oversized blooms, Amaryllis can rival Peonies and dinner plate Dahlias in size and impact. Traditionally associated with winter holidays, these flowers come in shades of red, pink, white, and even striped varieties.
Winter Greenery
While winter greens certainly read as “holiday” for many people, we know some couples LOVE the idea of a holiday wedding! If this vibe is for you, consider using winter greenery like holly, cedar, pine, or spruce to build the perfect wintery floral centerpieces. Pairing greenery with other seasonal elements like berries or bright white blooms celebrates the best of what this season has to offer.
No matter what season you’re planning a wedding, we have two fantastic options for your wedding flower experience.
